Re-reading this before the second book in the trilogy comes out. McKinley is one of my favorite authors, and this is an exceptional book that rewards re-reading. The world-building is exemplary; McKinley creates not only a human society that interacts with pegasi, she creates an entire Pegasus society, with its own traditions and customs. And she never talks down to younger readers – the text is dense with pegasi language and struggles with complex issues wrapped in a personal story. For those reasons, I’d target it to maybe age 13 and up.
