All Things Wise and Wonderful, by James Herriot

These books are absolute gems, recreating the Yorkshire life of a country vet in the 1930s. Herriot tells stories beautifully, loves the animals he cares for, both great and small, and his deep affection for his adopted part of the world glows throughout. Wonderful, wonderful books. For ages 10 and up.

The Nosy Neighbor, by Fern Michaels

Great beach-read romance. When big-city defense attorney Lucy Baker leaves her practice and moves to a small town, she has no worries about her fiance at all. But that all changes when the FBI shows up at her door on one hand, and, on the other, her neighbor’s dumb dog falls in love with her dog and tunnels to freedom.
