Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith

Terrific adventure story starring a wonderful heroine – flawed, headstrong, and resourceful. Mel is heir to her father’s castle, but she has always run wild in the hills instead of being a typical heiress. But when he dies, leaving Mel and her brother to wage war on the king, all her wild-child ways are suddenly useful to the entire kingdom. I loved that this book continually zigged when I expected it to zag, so I never saw the plot twists coming. I look forward to read a continuation of this story – Mel makes a wonderful companion. For 14 and up.
