Desperate Duchesses, by Eloisa James

Unlike most romances set in London’s ton, this one weaved back and forth among many characters, and since I didn’t read the blurb first (I never do), I had fun trying to figure out who our romantic leads were going to be. Was it the duchess in a fading marriage? the duke who cares only for chess? the earl who’s the catch of the season, but lives with his illegitimate child? the heiress whose father is a poet? the duke obsessed with his career in the House of Lords? the on-the shelf deb who knows sh has little to offer in marriage?

All these characters lead rich, full lives and it was great to spend time with them. The primary romance is delectable and I hope the others’ stories are pursued in future books. A steamy read for 18 and up.
