The Ghost, by Monica McCarty

Joan is a spy for Robert the Bruce in 1300s Scotland, and when she meets Alex, who is trying to find the spy working against England, all her cool confidence evaporates, along with his chivalrous ideals. A great steamy read, this bodice-ripper a self-assured heroine who is able to take care of herself. This is also a great era for historical fiction, and the history of the climactic Scottish/English battle is fascinating.

Note that this is the final of a 12-book series, and there is much reference to what has gone before, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying this story as a stand-alone. I liked it enough to read McCarty’s earlier work. Recommended for 18 and up.
