Many Bloody Returns, edited by Charlaine Harris

A solid anthology, with some great short stories from the worlds of Sookie Stackhouse, Harry Dresden, the Morganville Vampires, and Women of the Otherworld. All the authors were given the topic of vampires and birthdays, and the results range from humorous to bleak, from light-hearted to disturbing. If you’re a vampire fan, this is your anthology. For 16 and up, but most are targeted at adult readers.

Dead to the World, by Charlaine Harris

I read the first half-dozen of this series several years ago, and remembered liking this one best, but it didn’t hold up in rereading. I remember really loving Eric and Sookie’s relationship, but after reading the new paranormal series, like Immortals After Dark and Black Dagger Brotherhood, Harris’ writing doesn’t seem as sexy or as compelling. Overall, a lot like eating cotton candy. Empty calories.

Strange Brew, by P.N. Elrod, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Rachel Caine, Karen Chance, Charlaine Harris, Faith Hunter, Caitlin Kittredge, Jenna Maclaine

This short story collection is stronger than Wedding, since it is not linked by a theme, and the first two, by Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher, are terrific. There is also work by Charlaine Harris, and I greatly enjoyed the story by Rachel Caine. A fun read.
